Origins and founding

Regarded as the original shrine of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha. It has no main hall.

The stone torii and the approach

The stone torii. Its plaque reads “Fujisan Motomiya, Yamamiya Sengen Jinja”.

The long Hei-jumon gate

Beyond the long Hei-jumon gate lies an open space that leads to the worship site.

What to see

The worship site: a space marked out only with stones, from which Mount Fuji is seen directly ahead. What is worshipped is not a building but the mountain itself. Also the stone steps on the approach and the hoko-tate-ishi stone.

Cultural context

One of the few places where the form a shrine took before any building was erected has been preserved as it was. It has the same structure as Omiwa Jinja in Nara (no main sanctuary; Mount Miwa is worshipped), and here you can see for yourself that shrine buildings came later.
