Origins and founding

In 1660, the lord of Marugame Domain in Sanuki is said to have brought the deity of Kotohira-gu from his home province to his Edo residence. The gods are associated with safety at sea and prosperity in business.

Cultural context

A working example of how kanjo spread deities across Japan. Daimyo residences in Edo brought gods from their home provinces during the sankin-kotai system (→ Kami, ranks and lineages: Lineage). The head shrine is Kotohira-gu in Kagawa.
