Enshrined deitiesSukunahikona (Sugawara no Michizane enshrined alongside) LocationChofu, Tokyo

Origins and founding

An Engishiki-listed shrine, recorded in the 927 Engishiki Jinmyocho. Guardian shrine of Chofu. It was also called Goshuku Tenjin.

What to see

Tenjin market on the 25th of every month, with antiques. The approach runs along the old Koshu Kaido. The shrine is linked to GeGeGe no Kitaro — its creator, Mizuki Shigeru, lived in Chofu for many years, and the shrine appears in the work.

Cultural context

A shikinai-sha, listed in the Jinmyocho, the register of shrines in the Engishiki of 927. It is said to have moved from its old site, Koten Tenjin, to its present location in 1477 to escape a flood of the Tama River.
