Origins and founding

According to the shrine’s own tradition, founded in 1104 (Choji 1). It is counted among Japan's three great Tenjin shrines, alongside Dazaifu Tenmangu and Kitano Tenmangu. Minamoto no Yoritomo made it a guardian of the shogunate's unlucky north-east.
