Notable shrine Yoyogi Hachimangu

Yoyogi Hachimangu

Enshrined deityEmperor Ojin LocationShibuya, Tokyo

Origins and founding

Traditionally founded in 1212. Guardian shrine of Yoyogi.

What to see

The grounds contain the remains of a Jomon-period settlement, the Yoyogi Hachiman site. A reconstructed dwelling is open to visitors. Harajuku and Meiji Jingu are within walking distance.

Cultural context

The shrine grounds show continuity of settlement since Jomon times. Water and high ground suited both Jomon communities and later shrines. The terrain answers why a shrine stands here.
